The increase use of broadband in pedagogy to access resources hosted on the Internet coupled with the rise of Internet computing and reliable inexpensive broadband connectivity is driving institions with distributed branches to review how Internet service is being provisioned.

 

 

Software defined network (SDN) based on the segmentation of network functions in software, promises not only address the multiple path issues, but also promise to

optimized the path to the internet while leveraging a multitude of transport technologies for increase capacity and speed, while reducing cost.

 

The wide area network (WAN) version of SDN is software-defined wide area networking (SD-WAN) which is being introduced as an IP based cloud-networking service for

internet dominant WAN.

 

SD-WAN breaks the network into a data forward and control segment.  This segmentation of the network reduces the path to the internet (1 hop, instead of 3), simplifies management with a single overlay controller and increase the number of data transport technologies possible to access the internet, i.e. wireless, fixed lines etc. can be used simultaneously.  SD-WAN and Virtual WAN solutions focuses on providing centralised virtual package of WAN connections over an infrastructure that substitutes internet broadband connects for private WAN connections, while maintaining network uniqueness and security.

 

SD-WAN is not a technology, but rather it’s an architecture model, based on the separation and virtualization the data transport and control mechanism in network model,

while maintaining the network topology and security posture. This modularizing of network components functions; allow multiple data transport technologies to be used with end-point security.
